How OQ Started
OQ Mechanical opened in 2017, but Jake Ortega was in the trade long before that. He came up through the mechanical side working for one of the big Albuquerque shops, learning refrigerated air, furnaces, and the quirks of cooling homes in the high desert. When he decided he could do it better on his own terms, he went out and did it. The next week he was running his own calls.
The first year looked nothing like today. It was Jake, his tools, and an old truck with a few hundred thousand miles on it, working out of his garage. One of his very first customers was a homeowner named Judy with a package unit and a swamp cooler setup. She is still a customer nine years later, and that unit is still running. That is the through-line for how OQ works: do the job right the first time and the customer stays for a decade.
Where We Are Now
These days OQ runs a fleet of service trucks, a shop, and an office that actually answers when you call. Jake’s brother runs the operations side, which keeps the scheduling tight and the crews where they need to be. Three field technicians handle the day-to-day calls across the metro, and the work has grown from one-off repairs to full system installs, commercial mechanical, and everything in between.
What has not changed is who shows up. This is still a family-run shop, not a franchise with a call center three states away. When you book OQ, you get the same standard Jake set on day one, whether it’s a swamp cooler pump on a Tuesday or a full refrigerated air conversion.

Jake holds a New Mexico mechanical contractor license, earned the hard way by proving the hours and passing the exam, not by buying a logo for a website. OQ Mechanical is licensed and insured, and the company pulls permits when the job calls for one.
